How to Send TradingView Alerts to Telegram and MT5
TradingView has no Telegram alert option, so alerts need a go-between. To read alert text, send the webhook through a service that calls Telegram's sendMessage. To trade as well, send it to TradingView Link: the EA places the order in MT4 or MT5, and our bot reports the result.
Can TradingView send alerts to Telegram directly?
No. TradingView's alert notification options are app notification, toast notification, email, webhook URL, sound and plain text. Telegram isn't on the list. Its Pine Script FAQ calls sending alerts straight to Telegram "challenging due to protocol differences and formatting requirements", and suggests a go-between that receives the webhook and sends the message on.
So every route starts with a webhook alert. That needs a TradingView plan from Essential up and 2-factor authentication on your account.
Which route do you need?
| What you want | Route | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Read alert text in Telegram, no trading | TradingView webhook to a go-between service, then Telegram | A go-between service. No MetaTrader or TradingView Link plan |
| Trade the alert, with a report in Telegram | TradingView webhook to TradingView Link, then the EA and our bot | MetaTrader running, and our Basic plan or higher |
| Place orders by typing in Telegram | Message our bot directly | MetaTrader running, and our Basic plan or higher |
| Copy a signal provider's channel into MT5 | A Telegram copier. Our bot does not do this | MetaTrader or a hosted terminal, and the copier service |
How do you send alert text to Telegram without trading?
You don't need us for this. TradingView's FAQ names Zapier, Integromat and Pipedream as go-between services, or your own Node.js or Python script. We haven't tested these, so try yours with a test alert.
- Create a bot with Telegram's BotFather and keep its token private.
- Get the ID of the chat that should receive the messages.
- Create a webhook in the go-between service and copy its URL.
- Have the service call Telegram's
sendMessage method, which requires
chat_idandtext. - In TradingView, turn on Webhook URL, paste that URL, and write the alert message. Placeholders fill in the live values:
{"ticker": "{{ticker}}", "price": "{{close}}", "note": "RSI crossed 70"} Three limits apply to this route:
- TradingView cancels the request if the service takes longer than three seconds to respond.
- TradingView says webhooks "may occasionally fail" to arrive, so don't treat this as your only warning.
- Telegram allows 1 to 4,096 characters per message, and asks bots to stay near one message a second in a chat and to send at most 20 a minute in a group.
Nothing on this route places a trade. For that, you need something connected to MetaTrader.
How do you connect TradingView, Telegram and MT5 with TradingView Link?
- Create an MT5 or MT4 webhook in the dashboard, install the EA and attach it to one chart. The MT5 guide and MT4 guide show each screen.
- Click Add Secret in Settings to generate your webhook password, and save it.
- Open @tvbobo_bot in Telegram, and send this with your own webhook ID and password:
/setup YourWebhookID YourWebhookPassword The bot replies "Your TVBOBO ID has been saved" (TVBOBO is our older name), and your dashboard then shows the linked Telegram ID. Your password is now in your chat history, so delete that message once you're linked.
Next, write your alert in TradingView in our format, with your webhook URL:
YourWebhookPassword
long EURUSD q=0.1 sl=300 tp=600 The webhook guide covers every option. When the alert fires, the bot sends you the order it received, along these lines:
Cmd ID: [command ID]
Webhook ID: [your webhook ID]
OrderType: long
Symbol: EURUSD
Quantity: 0.10
Stop Loss: 300.00000
Take Profit: 600.00000 That message means we received the order, not that it filled. A second message follows from the EA with the result.
What messages does the bot send?
| When | What you see |
|---|---|
| An order line is received | Cmd ID, then the order: webhook ID, type, symbol, size, and any stops |
| The EA placed it | Status: Success, with the same details |
| The EA or broker refused it | Status: ERROR, with the error code and description |
| The EA connects or disconnects | Connected! or Disconnected! |
| The EA has stopped checking in | Your webhook [ID] is offline since [time] |
| An alert has the wrong password | Invalid password from webhook |
| Your plan limit is used up or has expired | The reason, then: please upgrade your subscription |
The disconnect and offline messages are often the most useful ones. A closed terminal or a restarted VPS stops every trade without any sign in TradingView, and these tell you on your phone.
How do you place a trade from Telegram?
Once you're linked, send the bot the same order line you'd put in an alert, as a plain message. Leave out the password line, because linking has already identified you:
long EURUSD q=0.1 sl=300 tp=600 And to close your trades on that symbol:
flat EURUSD One message can hold several lines. They take the same route as a webhook alert, so your plan's latency
applies, which is about 3 seconds on Basic. Magic numbers work too, and a plain flat doesn't
close trades tagged with m=, as
the magic number guide explains.
Type carefully. The server doesn't check the action word, and there's no confirmation step. A line with a single word or a bad number is skipped with no reply. A misspelled action on a valid symbol places no order, and the status message can't be relied on to catch it, so check the Trade tab in MetaTrader after a manual order.
When do you need the MetaTrader leg?
For every trade. Telegram only carries the message. The EA inside your MT4 or MT5 terminal places the order, and EAs don't run in the mobile apps, so that terminal has to be open on a PC or VPS.
If the EA is offline, you can still get the first message, because that's sent when we receive the order. No trade follows. By default the order expires within seconds, because new accounts have Command Timeout set to 0 in Settings. A higher value lets the EA pick up an order when it comes back within that time, possibly at a very different price, so raise it with care.
What can't the Telegram bot do?
- Forward your alert text. It reports order fields only. A line such as "RSI crossed 70" would be read as a badly formed order, and your wording wouldn't reach you. Use the go-between route for that.
- Copy signal channels. It ignores channel posts and doesn't interpret signal wording. Don't forward a provider's posts to it either, because each counts as an alert and is read as an order. For copying, you need a tool such as TradeSgnl's copier; see our TradeSgnl comparison.
- Answer questions. It has no commands for balance, open positions or trade history. Use MetaTrader for those.
- Close everything at once. Each
flatline names a symbol, and magic numbers are handled separately. - Link one Telegram account to several webhooks. A Telegram account can be linked to only one
webhook, and
/setuprefuses a second with an error. - Protect a lost phone. Anyone who can open your linked Telegram chat can send orders without a password. Deleting the webhook secret in Settings also removes the Telegram link.
Prop-firm traders should check their firm's rules first. FundedNext, for example, bans EAs that incorporate apps such as Telegram or WhatsApp, as our prop-firm guide explains.
Which plan includes Telegram?
Basic and up. Pricing has the full comparison, and the plan limit counts Telegram messages and webhook alerts together.
- Free, $0: 5 alerts per month, latency ~20 seconds. Enough to test your setup.
- Basic, $4.99/month: 500 alerts per day, latency ~3 seconds. Telegram trading & alerts, webhook dashboard.
- Standard, $9.99/month: 3,000 alerts per day, latency ~1 second. Telegram, webhook dashboard, alert logs.
- Pro, $19.99/month: 7,000 alerts per day, latency Sub-second. Alert sharing, Telegram, webhook dashboard, alert logs.
Frequently asked questions
Can TradingView send alerts to Telegram directly?
Telegram isn't one of TradingView's alert notification options. Its Pine Script FAQ suggests a go-between service that receives the webhook and calls Telegram's sendMessage method. A webhook alert needs an Essential or higher TradingView plan.
Does the TradingView Link bot forward my alert text to Telegram?
No. It reads each line as an order and reports the order details it found, not your wording. To read free text such as a note about an indicator, use a go-between service instead.
Do I need MT5 open to use the Telegram bot?
To trade, yes. The EA in your MT4 or MT5 terminal places every order, so that terminal has to be running on a PC or VPS. The bot can report that it received an order while the EA is offline, but no trade is placed.
Which Telegram commands does the bot have?
One: /setup, which links your webhook. Any other slash command gets the reply "I don't know that command". Orders are plain messages that use the alert syntax, without a slash.
Can I trade from Telegram without a TradingView plan?
Yes. Orders you type to the bot don't come from TradingView at all, so no TradingView webhook plan is involved. You still need a TradingView Link plan that includes Telegram, and the EA running in MetaTrader.
Do Telegram messages count towards my alert limit?
Yes. Each message you send the bot counts as one alert, like a webhook alert, however many lines it holds. It counts even if no line in it is valid. With alert sharing, each shared target counts as one more.
Can the bot copy trades from a Telegram signal channel?
No. It ignores channel posts and doesn't interpret signal wording. It only acts on messages sent to it directly, and it reads them as our alert syntax. For that job you need a Telegram copier.
Is Telegram included in the free plan?
Our pricing lists Telegram trading and alerts from the Basic plan, at $4.99 a month, and up. Every paid plan starts with a 7-day free trial without a credit card, so you can test it first.
