TradingView to MT5 Not Working? How to Find and Fix the Problem
Check three places, in this order. First, TradingView's alert log: did the alert fire? Second, your TradingView Link dashboard: is the EA connected? Third, the Experts tab in MT5: what did the EA say when the alert arrived? Most failures come from an expired or outdated alert, automated trading switched off, a missing WebRequest URL, or a symbol name that doesn't match your broker's.
This guide uses the messages our EA prints, so it's most precise for TradingView Link. The TradingView and MT5 checks apply to any webhook bridge.
Step 1: Did the TradingView alert fire?
Open the Alerts panel in TradingView and look at the alert's log. If the alert isn't there, or the log has no entry at the time you expected, the problem is on the TradingView side:
- No webhooks on your plan. Webhook alerts need Essential, Plus, Premium, Expert or Ultimate, and 2-factor authentication turned on.
- The alert expired. Essential and Plus alerts last at most 2 months. Premium and higher plans can keep them open-ended.
- TradingView stopped the alert. It does that when an alert triggers more than 15 times in 3 minutes.
- The strategy hasn't traded live yet. Strategy alerts fire only for orders on live bars, never for the historical trades in a backtest.
- You changed the script or its inputs. The alert keeps running the version from when you created it. Delete it and create a new one.
- The webhook URL is wrong. Copy it again from the Webhook card in your dashboard and paste it into the alert's Webhook URL field.
- "Timeout exceeded" in the log. TradingView cancels webhook requests that take longer than 3 seconds. If you see it more than once, contact us.
If the alert fired but the message starts with "buy" or "sell", see how to automate a TradingView strategy: the EA expects long, short or flat.
Step 2: Is the EA connected?
Open your TradingView Link dashboard. The MT Connection card shows connected when the EA has checked in within the last 2 minutes. If it shows disconnected:
- MT5 must be open and logged in to your broker account. If your PC sleeps, nothing is placed; a Windows VPS keeps MT5 online.
- The EA must be on a chart. Attach it again if you closed that chart.
- Automated trading must be on. MT5's help calls the toolbar button AutoTrading; newer builds label it Algo Trading. Allow automated trading in the EA's settings too.
- WebRequest must allow our URL. In Tools > Options > Expert Advisors, tick
Allow WebRequest for listed URL and add
https://tradingviewlink.com. - The webhook ID must match. The ID in the EA's inputs has to be the one in your dashboard's Webhook card.
After a short disconnection, the EA can still place alerts that arrived while it was offline, as long as they're within its order-recovery timeout. Our documentation explains the setting.
Step 3: What does the Experts tab say?
In MT5, open the Toolbox (View > Toolbox) and select the Experts tab. Find the lines from the time the alert fired. Each message below comes from our EA:
| EA message | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Error in WebRequest. Error code=… | The EA couldn't reach our server. | Add https://tradingviewlink.com under Tools > Options > Expert Advisors > Allow WebRequest for listed URL, and check the internet connection. |
Client connection failed, resting for … / Client disconnected. Will retry. | The connection to our server dropped. The EA retries by itself. | Check the internet connection of the PC or VPS. If it repeats for more than a few minutes, contact us. |
Symbol not found | The symbol in your alert doesn't exist at your broker under that name. | Use the exact name from Market Watch, including any suffix your broker adds. |
Quantity is 0 | The order size worked out to zero, for example a qt=percent size on a small balance. | Raise q=, or use a fixed lot size that meets your broker's minimum. |
Error: Unable to find exchange rate… | For qt=percent sizing, the EA couldn't convert between your account currency and the symbol's currency. | Show the conversion pair (directly or through USD) in Market Watch, or use a fixed q= size. |
Out of session, skip long. S=… | Your s= session filter blocked the trade. | Sessions use your broker's server time. Check the times, or remove s=. |
Out of range, skip long. R=… | The price was outside your r= range. | Widen or remove r=. |
Exceeds max trades | The EA's MaxTradePerSymbol limit (10 by default) is reached. | Close trades, or raise MaxTradePerSymbol in the EA inputs. |
Exceeds pyramiding / Exceeds pyramiding per magic | The limit on trades in the same direction is reached: Pyramiding (10 by default) or PyramidingPerMagic. | Raise the setting in the EA inputs if you want more trades in one direction. |
Invalid expiration time | The e= expiry on a pending order was rejected. | Check the e= value (in minutes), or remove it. |
Invalid order type | The first word of the line isn't long, short, flat, cancel or modify. A common cause is {{strategy.order.action}}, which sends buy or sell. | Use one of the five commands. For strategies, use alert_message (see the strategy guide). |
OrderSend failed | Your broker rejected the order. A return code follows. | Look up the code in the table below. |
ERROR - Failed to modify position… | A modify command couldn't change the stop or target, often because it's too close to the price. | Move the level further away, within your broker's minimum stop distance. |
What do MT5 return codes mean?
When your broker rejects an order, the EA logs "OrderSend failed" with a return code. These are the common ones, with MetaQuotes' description:
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 10004 | Requote | The price moved. Resend, or raise Slippage in the EA inputs. |
| 10006 | Request rejected | Your broker refused the order. Ask the broker why. |
| 10013 | Invalid request | Check the command and its parameters. |
| 10014 | Invalid volume | q= is below the minimum, above the maximum or not a multiple of the symbol's lot step. |
| 10015 | Invalid price | For pending orders, check p=. |
| 10016 | Invalid stops | The stop or target is on the wrong side or too close to the price. |
| 10017 | Trade is disabled | The symbol can't be traded on your account. |
| 10018 | Market is closed | The alert came outside trading hours. |
| 10019 | Not enough money | Reduce q= or add funds. |
| 10027 | Autotrading disabled by client terminal | Turn on the AutoTrading (Algo Trading) button. |
| 10030 | Invalid order filling type | The EA picks the filling type from the symbol's settings. If you still see this, contact us with the symbol name. |
| 10031 | No connection with the trade server | MT5 lost its connection to your broker. Check the connection status in the bottom right. |
Is it your TradingView Link plan?
Check the Plan card in your dashboard. It shows how many signals you've used out of your plan's limit, when the plan ends, and whether the account is active. The free plan includes 5 alerts a month. Delivery time also depends on the plan: about 20 seconds on Free, about 3 seconds on Basic, about 1 second on Standard and under a second on Pro. A trade that arrives 20 seconds after the alert on the free plan is working as expected.
Still stuck?
Email support@tradingviewlink.com or ask in our Telegram group. Include the alert message without the password, the time the alert fired, and the lines from the Experts tab. That's usually enough for us to find the cause.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my TradingView alert not opening a trade in MT5?
Check three places in order. In TradingView's alert log, see whether the alert fired. In your TradingView Link dashboard, see whether the EA is connected. In MT5's Experts tab, read what the EA printed when the alert arrived. The message there tells you the cause, such as a symbol name that doesn't match your broker's.
What does "Autotrading disabled by client terminal" mean?
It's MT5 return code 10027: automated trading is switched off in the terminal. Turn on the AutoTrading button in the toolbar (called Algo Trading in newer builds) and allow automated trading in the EA's own settings.
Do I need to keep MT5 open?
Yes. The EA runs inside MT5, so the terminal must be open and logged in to your broker for trades to be placed. TradingView alerts run on TradingView's servers, so the browser can be closed. A Windows VPS keeps MT5 online when your PC is off.
Why did my alerts stop working after a few weeks?
Usually the alert expired. Alerts on TradingView's Essential and Plus plans last at most 2 months; Premium and higher plans can keep them open-ended. TradingView also stops an alert that triggers more than 15 times in 3 minutes, and an alert keeps running the old version of a script after you edit it.
Why does the EA say "Symbol not found"?
The symbol in your alert doesn't match your broker's name for it. Many brokers add a suffix such as .r or .pro, or use their own names, like GOLD for XAUUSD. Copy the exact name from MT5's Market Watch into your alert.
Is it the same on MT4?
The checks are the same. The MT4 EA logs "Invalid action" where the MT5 EA logs "Invalid order type", and MT4 has its own error codes: 130 invalid stops, 131 invalid trade volume, 134 not enough money, and 4109 trade not allowed, which means "Allow live trading" is off in the EA's properties.
