How to Connect TradingView to MT4 (Automated, No Coding)

Last updated · By the TradingView Link team
Short answer

TradingView can't send orders to MetaTrader 4 by itself. A TradingView alert posts a webhook to a bridge, and an Expert Advisor (EA) in your MT4 terminal places the trade. With TradingView Link, you create an MT4 webhook, install the EA, allow WebRequest and AutoTrading, then paste the webhook URL into your TradingView alert.

Still on MT4? You don't have to move. TradingView Link supports MetaTrader 4 as well as MetaTrader 5, on every plan. That matters if you're comparing bridges: PineConnector's current plans only cover MT5 (checked November 2026). See the PineConnector comparison for details.

What do you need before you start?

You needWhy
A paid TradingView plan Webhook notifications start at the Essential plan and aren't available on TradingView's free plan. TradingView pricing
2-factor authentication on TradingView TradingView only allows webhook alerts when 2-factor authentication is enabled. TradingView help
MT4 on a Windows PC or VPS The EA runs inside your MT4 desktop terminal, so MT4 has to stay open and connected.

A TradingView Link account The free plan (5 alerts a month) is enough to test the setup.

How do you connect TradingView to MT4, step by step?

Step 1: Create an MT4 webhook

In the TradingView Link dashboard, choose or create an MT4 webhook for this account. Copy its webhook URL and note the webhook ID.

Step 2: Install the MT4 EA

Download the MT4 EA from the dashboard. In MT4, open File → Open Data Folder, go to MQL4/Experts and paste the EA, then refresh the Navigator or restart MT4.

Step 3: Turn on AutoTrading and WebRequest

In Tools → Options → Expert Advisors, allow automated trading and DLL imports, and add https://tradingviewlink.com to the URLs allowed for WebRequest. Check that the AutoTrading button in the toolbar is green.

Step 4: Attach the EA to one chart

Drag the EA onto a single chart, enable live trading in its properties, enter your webhook ID and save. Run only one TradingView Link EA per MT4 account: that one instance trades every symbol on the account.

Step 5: Generate your webhook password

In the dashboard, click Add Secret for this webhook. The password goes on the first line of every alert message.

Step 6: Add the webhook to your TradingView alert

Create an alert in TradingView, turn on Webhook URL in its notifications, paste your webhook URL and write the message as shown below.

Step 7: Test on a demo account

Trigger the alert and confirm the order shows up in MT4's Trade tab. Check the Experts tab if it doesn't, then test your exit alerts the same way.

Which alert messages work with MT4?

The format is the same on MT4 and MT5: the webhook password on line one, then one instruction per line with the action, symbol, size and options.

Open a long position with a stop loss and take profit:

YourWebhookPassword
long BTCUSD q=0.1 sl=1000 tp=300

Scale into a short with two orders in one alert:

YourWebhookPassword
short BTCUSD q=0.1 sl=800 tp=1000
short BTCUSD q=0.2 sl=800 tp=1000

Move the stop to breakeven and set a 3% target on open BTCUSD positions:

YourWebhookPassword
modify BTCUSD sl=-1 tp=3%

Close 30% of all open BTCUSD lots:

YourWebhookPassword
flat BTCUSD cq=30%

The documentation lists every option, including limit orders, trailing stops, trading sessions and magic numbers.

Why isn't my TradingView alert trading on MT4?

Common MT4 problems and what to check
ProblemWhat to check
No trades at all AutoTrading is green, live trading is enabled in the EA properties, https://tradingviewlink.com is in the WebRequest list, and the webhook ID in the EA matches the webhook in your alert.
The alert fires but is ignored The password is on the first line, the symbol matches your broker's naming (including suffixes), and the action and q= follow the syntax.
Duplicate or unexpected trades Only one TradingView Link EA should run per MT4 account. Use magic numbers to keep strategies apart.
Connection errors Allow WebRequest and DLL imports, and check firewall or VPS network rules.

Should you test on a demo account first?

Yes. Run new alerts, symbol names, stop distances and EA settings on a demo account before you go live. Automation places trades exactly as instructed, including mistakes in an alert message, and leveraged trading can lose more than you expect.

Frequently asked questions

Does TradingView work with MT4?

Not directly. TradingView has no built-in connection to MetaTrader 4. A webhook bridge plus an Expert Advisor (EA) in your MT4 terminal turns TradingView alerts into MT4 orders.

Does TradingView Link still support MT4?

Yes. There is a dedicated MT4 EA alongside the MT5 one, and every plan, including the free plan, works with both platforms.

Do I need a paid TradingView plan?

Yes. Webhook notifications are included from TradingView's Essential plan up and aren't available on the free plan. TradingView also requires 2-factor authentication before it sends webhook alerts.

Do I need one EA per symbol?

No. Run one TradingView Link EA per MT4 account, attached to a single chart. That one instance can trade every symbol on the account that is visible in Market Watch.

Can I run several strategies on one MT4 account?

Yes. Add a magic number such as m=1001 to each strategy's alerts so the strategies manage their own positions without interfering with each other.

Do I need a VPS?

MT4 has to be running for the EA to trade. A Windows VPS keeps it online 24/7; a home PC works too, as long as it stays on and connected.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 5 alerts a month for testing. Paid plans start at $4.99 a month and begin with a 7-day free trial. No credit card is required.
